A lot of things you overlook and make do, until you then have it and you realise the importance. I realised that the space to be able to step back and look at your paintings/artwork from a slight distance is of colossal importance to the work. Moving is hard! I wanted to keep my art materials out until the very last minute so that I could alternate between packing and working.. But it never works this way. In the end I had to pack my things up and reside myself to time to adjust. I think I must have developed a nervous twitch, or painting withdrawal symptoms. There are countless benefits to the new area I can work in, but the most bountiful points are the light and the space to step back. Composition and arrangement within my paintings has been something of an ongoing thought recently, following a painting that just did not sit quite right with me. The finer details… Intricate painting and gold leaf in art

Wildlife Oil Paintings My wildlife work has been taken ever so slightly further this month as I have taken on even finer detail and chosen to practice embellishments with gold leaf. I am a true magpie with shiny and glittery things, and so when I read up on gilding my work I was very enthused to try it out. I am obsessed with embellishing my work with tiny and minute detailing in contrast with sweeping brush strokes and bold marks. I ordered the booklets of gold leaf online after researching how to apply them, especially to paintings! It is a small touch I will be applying to certain pieces where I crave that opulence and richness of detail and colour. It may take a while to master the scalpel and application, it is a lot thinner than I imagined! It can barely be felt between my fingers, it is so incredibly fine that as I pulled a leaf out of the booklet to look, my fan heater sent it whirling around my room. (Which I …

2013 – A Nostalgic Overview! (Yes! 2014!!!)

It is the LAST DAY OF 2013!! YEAAHHHHHHH! What a year! Looking back over 2013 I couldn’t be more proud. This time last year I had finished my first oil painting of an owl in flight, and had been working on a blog/website/social network upheaval to make my work more widely accessible and to connect with other artists and art lovers. I sit here today with such a huge backlog of paintings under my belt, so much so that I cannot believe I managed to do so much in just one year! And a great following. Gorilla oil painting so far.

Gorillas fast became one of my favourite subjects to paint. This could be down to their powerful attitudes that’s are so easily readable and relatable in their facial expressions. To be able to capture a certain power behind this animal is an aim of mine after falling in love with their natures. As my style evolves I find myself going back to gorillas as a subject and trying again to capture the same features, in a different way. This one is a particular favourite of mine so far, with a fair amount of work left to do, and more detail to add I am excited to see where this one goes. Katy x

Two editorials to end the year with and a BIG thank you!

Having work published in a magazine or editorial is such a huge achievement for me! I am so excited that as my first year as a professional artist, I managed to end it on a high of featuring in two magazines, one being overseas in America and the other a cover feature. Last October with my life at somewhat of a fork in the road I had got away from a situation and sat in a cafe with a pot of tea and a magazine. I saw women being celebrated for their fantastic work in so many different genres of art, fashion, politics, and business. What I noticed about these articles were that each of these women had faced a fork in the road, hit rock bottom or had been forced to consider a huge change in their life before they decided to make the change themselves. Although I was dead centre of a difficult situation, I felt so far away from it with the realisation that I was free to do what I enjoyed …

Iconic Women Oil Painting Collection – Getting there!

The collection of oil paintings I have been working on showing ten iconic women in colour and opulence, have lately been stepping into the light and starting to take form. It has taken a few months to make a good foundation on my collection, I have created the basic layers for each portrait, however whilst some are almost finished, others are still in their earliest stages. A few things I never knew to consider whilst creating a body of work that all related in style and form, is how much your work can improve/change within this time. This means that as I move onto the further pieces, I then find myself going back to the first few and making the edits to lace them all together. It hasnt been easy, however i have the first five close to finished (and now in storage so i can finish up the last five without being tempted with too many edits!) and seeing them together makes it worthwhile. How to be an Artist. Everybody is an artist at what they do; and everything you do is an art form. Whether it is the efficiency in which you input data into a system at work, or if it is a full flowing creative stream. Art (in my opinion!) is taking something everyday and making ‘something’. And this ‘something’ doesn’t have to be a painting, or a craft project or something so skilfully applied that people are in awe. Making this ‘something’ is either an expression of yourself that only you can see, something blatant, or something you enjoyed the process for. The people who seem to understand the world the most seem to see the potential in everything. The people who seem to see the potential in everything seem to be the happiest and most interesting people. And the happiest and most interesting people make art of everything they do. To be an artist isn’t always about painting a picture. It is taking what you can and making ‘something’ where the end result is …

BOKO Art X Music – Exhibition – London

BOKO was a great night of music and art in a bustling area of East London. Well ran, the night was punctuated with live events throughout with artwork up by myself, The talented Jack Shaw (hard working musician and great abstract artist) and Helen Simmons, animated artist who had a great piece running throughout the night (video to be uploaded) Starting with Tom Bright playing acoustic guitar, he welcomed people with some beautiful music at the entrance, great fun to watch and listen! I then painted for an hour, then followed by BASSn8s who despite the heat put on a mesmerising performance in a small space. Great night!
