Book! A collection of collections – Katy Jade Dobson

I have a book! For over two years this has been in the works. I knew very specifically how I wanted this book to look and feel. It was going to house years of artwork after all. The title Phosphenes comes from the name for the sensation of spots of colours and light that you see when you rub your eyes. A phenomena of seeing without light entering the eye. A title that inspired an earlier collection, and a word I find truly beautiful. At a huge 224 pages, simple hardback cover design with coloured hot foil pressed lettering emblazoned on the front and spine, aesthetically making this book a perfect coffee table book. Inside, the content design (by Ash Dowie) is sleek and minimal to offer more attention for the intricate and boldly colourful works that my signature style focuses on. Phosphene ˈfɒsfiːn/ noun / plural noun: phosphenes – ‘A sensation of a ring or spot of light produced by pressure on the eyeball or direct stimulation of the visual system other than by light.’ The second collection for Wishbone Publishing by Katy Jade Dobson boasts a deluge of rich, vivacious colours and opulent textures in a joining of traditional oil painting with a modern presence. This coupling of classic inspirations and techniques, with contemporary deliverance shows a bold omnipresence throughout Katy’s work. Based heavily around the word ‘phosphenes’ as inspiration for this chromatic collection, the idea manifests within the aesthetics of each painting as the appliqué, the composition and the subjects themselves. Each subject is built up by a kaleidoscopic arrangement, a series that is adorned with ancient symbolism and original use of symmetry to show a partial balance to which the heavy embellishments do not adhere to. Progress Pictures – Stag Oil Painting

Recently I have been working further on my wildlife pieces. After the great reaction to my ‘Galloping Horses’ piece I wanted to work more on an atmospheric element whilst integrating factors of the idea of ‘The Golden Ratio’ and detail and space in close proximity. I recorded my progress, as usual, with this particular stag piece of the 3 sessions I have done so far. This piece has taken into consideration my recently learned word ‘phosphenes’ (the sensation of a ring of light and colour as a result of pressure on the eyeball) to bring about an abstract colour palette with glints of light as embellished detailing, also depicting beams of light on a forest floor. It is always useful to look back over the progression process of a piece, it shows how far it has come along, as well as what has been added in terms of atmosphere and general aura, over just likeness and realistic correctness.
